Becoming an ultrasound technician in West Virginia

The four-step process to become an ultrasound technician in West Virginia is detailed below.

Step 1: Complete your high school diploma or G.E.D.

Getting your high school diploma is one of the critical fundamentals to finding work in any skilled job. When considering careers in the medical industry, this is particularly true. Although it is sometimes possible to get some entry-level positions without at least a G.E.D., you’ll sooner or later find that opportunities for promotion are limited.

Where ultrasound technician courses are concerned, you may also notice quickly that almost all authorized programs ask applicants to give proof of at least a G.E.D. prior to beginning classes. For that reason, no matter your ultimate career goals, be sure that you complete this first step.

Step 2: Sign-up for an accredited ultrasound technician school

Ultrasound tech programs in West Virginia are required by state law to be approved by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Only graduates who finish their classes at a program sanctioned by one of these organizations are allowed to test for certification in the state.

Step 3: Graduate from the training program and all required training hours

Completing a formal course is required to become an ultrasound tech. Successfully taking this step requires you to finish the mandated number of hours of hands-on clinical instruction specified by your course.

You are not eligible to sit for any certification examination until you have finished all of the mandatory hours.

Step 4: Get your RDMS certification
