How to Become a Physician in 6 Steps

The 6 steps listed below are the exact steps you have to follow to become a doctor in the United States.
Step 1 – Earn your bachelor’s degree
Step 2 – Take and pass the (MCAT) Medical College Admissions Test
Step 3 – Earn your medical degree
Step 4 – Find and complete medical residency program
Step 5 – Get license in your state to practice medicine
Step 6 – Get a National Certification (optional but highly recommended)
Step 1 – Get Bachelor’s Degree
All entry in to medical school requires a bachelor’s degree. Many often wonder what medical schools are looking for on their students. They are looking for those students who have a diverse educational background, experience in the healthcare field and those who also have a strong grasp on the natural sciences. There is not a specific major to get for medical school. That being said, all applicants will have to make sure they complete courses in biology, chemistry, physics, and math.

To get healthcare field experience while getting your bachelors degree is a great idea. One of the best ways is through volunteering at clinics or hospitals. It is also a wonderful way to make sure becoming a physician is what you want to do.

Step 2 – Take and Pass the (MCAT) Medical College Admissions Test
One of the biggest things you can do for entry in to medical school is to get a high score on the MCAT test. MCAT scores are required at all medical schools. The MCAT test is a standardized one, that so institutions can see which students problem solve, critically think and write at the highest level. The MCAT includes sections on basic biology, chemistry, and physics. The MCAT exam can be registered for and taken up to three times a year to try and improve your score.
Step 3 – Get in to and Pass Medical School
Look forward to spending 4 years in medical school in most situations. You will spend the first couple of years with extensive classroom and lab work. The last two years is when students will work directly with patients under the supervision of actual physicians. In medical school students will study courses in anatomy, biochemistry, pathology, pharmacology and all the laws and regulations surrounding the healthcare field.

Clinical training will give students experience that they could never get in a classroom. They will participate in many specialty areas. These areas are most likely radiology, neurology, and medicine. The clinical training is designed to give aspiring doctors a chance to get a feel for what type of doctor they would like to become. After completing your clinical training and graduating from medical school you can go and apply for your residency.

Step 4 – Apply for and Complete Your Medical Residency
After finishing medical school, future physicians must apply for a medical residency. Residency programs give aspiring doctors a chance to work with patients directly and practice their skills in a real world setting on a medical team. There will be aspects of internal medicine, emergency medicine, psychiatry, pediatrics, and even anesthesiology in your medical residency. For those who have questions about medical residency, we have put together some FAQS below:

How much do you make while in a medical residency? – The average salary is $61,200 according to Medscape’s latest report.

How long is a medical residency? – in most cases 4 years, but 3-7 years is the common time-frame.

Do you have to get a medical residency to be a doctor? – Yes, you have to licensed to practice medicine in the United States and to be licensed you have to complete a residency.

What jobs can a physician have in the medical field if they do not have their residency completed? – Here is a list of some of the fields you can get in to in healthcare:

Pharmaceutical Sales
Pharmaceutical Research
Medical Research
Specialist in Poison Information
Sleep Medicine
Emergency Medical Technicians
Personal Trainers
Certified Surgical Technologists and Certified Surgical First Assistants
Certified Anesthesiologist Assistants
Diagnostic Medical Sonography
Genetics Counselors
Electrodiagnostic Medicine Technicians
Ultrasound Technicians
Respiratory Therapists
Massage Therapy

Step 5 – Get Your License to Practice Medicine
After you pass your medical school program and complete your residency and pass your exams (USMLE Step 1, Step 2 Clinical Knowledge and Step 2 Clinical Skills and Step 3), you can then apply for your license as a physician in the state you are going to practice medicine in.

The medical board for your state will have all the details you will need to get your license. As long as you have satisfied the previous steps included you will be on your way to becoming a doctor!

Step 6 – Get a Certification for Career Advancement
Even though it is not required to have a national medical certification like the Certification by the (ABMS) American Board of Medical Specialties it can really be beneficial to your career for they show your commitment to the career, show that you have the necessary skills and knowledge to be a licensed physician in any state.

Taking the time to get a certification can make the difference when getting that first job opportunity. Anything that sets you apart from the rest is what it is all about.
