The best way to find accredited LVN schools in Texas is to use the best resources and we have that covered! See our lists of schools and how to get started the correct way and be on your way to success! Texas is a member of the Enhamced Nursing Licensure Compact or the (eNLC). The eNLC gives nurses the chance to work in any of the member states with one license if these requirements are fulfilled.

Becoming a Licensed Vocational Nurse in Texas

In order to be permitted to work as a Licensed Vocational Nurse in Texas, you have to first graduate from a TX nursing board-approved course, pass the NCLEX-PN national licensing assessment, and own an up-to-date license issued by the Texas Nursing Board. All of these steps are discussed in detail below.

What is the process for getting certified as a Licensed Vocational Nurse in Texas?

The steps needed to take to become an LVN in Texas is summarized below.

Step 1 – Meet the minimum admission requirements for vocational nurse training in TX

The first step towards becoming an LVN is to make sure that you’ll be able to satisfy the standard admission requirements for vocational nursing training in Texas. While these prerequisites can vary somewhat from one school to the next, those noted below are relatively common.

Evidence of U.S. citizenship or legal residency
Minimum ACT exam score
A minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA in high school (or GED)

Step 2 – Pick the type of credential in practical nursing in Texas you would like to acquire

The next choice you’ll have to make is whether or not your goal is to get a an associate degree or a certificate (called a “diploma” by some courses). Each of these credentials may help you get a LVN position in Texas, but you will need to be aware of the advantages and disadvantages to each before deciding on one.

Diploma or Certificate

The standards of training and what you learn in a practical nursing diploma or certificate program in Texas commonly focus on showing the daily skills will be used as a Licensed Vocational Nurse. Most programs in Texas are completed in around 12-18 months. A wide range of schools offer these sought after courses, and many of them are made available in an online format as well. This is in contrast to associate’s degree courses which require general education and other college courses be taken too.

Associate Degree

The completion of practical nursing associate degree programs are done in two years and the information covered is a lot more extensive in scope. Courses awarding this credential are usually hosted by community colleges and in some cases, trade schools. That being said, they normally have more-stringent admission prerequisites that must be met.

Step 3 – Finish a LVN training class approved by the TX Nursing Board

LVN education in Texas is regulated by the Texas Nursing Board. In order for you to become able to challenge the NCLEX-PN, you need to first graduate from a LVN training program that is approved by the Texas nursing board.

What to look for in a Texas Licensed Vocational Nurse class

Deciding on the best course for your specific situation usually requires several considerations. You’ll want to consider the following as you compare LVN training programs in the Lonestar State

Just like any decision, you have to initially determine what your priorities are. For instance, if you are worried about what your classes will cost, you should start off by eliminating those LVN training programs that are outside your budget. You would then consider the second-most important thing to help narrow your list even further.

Repeat this process for every requirement that is critical for you, and you should at some point have just a couple of LVN programs to make a choice between. This greatly boosts your chances of selecting a program in Texas that will fit all of your requirements.

Approved Licensed Vocational Nurse courses in Texas

Here is a complete list of the LVN programs that are approved by the Texas Board of Nursing.
