LNA classes in Vermont are trying their best to fill the insane demand for qualified nursing aides and assistants across the country and in the state! For those interested in furthering their careers the nursing field, this is often a popular first step since its training prerequisites are comparatively low and the work provides good opportunities for interaction with other team members. Our staff thinks that the licensed nurse aide is a core position in allied health and needs to be supported strongly.

How to become a LNA in Vermont

Nursing assistants in Vermont are regulated by the Vermont Board of Nursing. For eligibility for any employment within the state, one has to complete the training requirements and then get listed on the Vermont Board of Nursing Registry that is managed by the board also..

What’s the process to become certified in Vermont?

Becoming a Licensed Nursing Assistant in VT requires these specific individual steps:

Step 1 – Have a high school diploma or G.E.D.

Earning your high school diploma is a basic foundation to becoming employed in any type of professional position. Working in the healthcare field is no exception. There are some positions in the field that may be held without a high school diploma, but they generally have little room for growth. While looking for a LNA licensing class, you may also find that most programs require students to have a diploma or G.E.D. before enrollment. For that reason, whatever your professional career goals, make sure that you finish this step.

Step 2 – Enroll in training at a VT-approved LNA program

Nurse assisting programs in Vermont are required by state law to be accredited by the Vermont Board of Nursing. To become able to challenge for license, you will need to first graduate from a program that is approved by this body. There are several things you need to look for when selecting a course to attend. You’ll want to look at the following when comparing training programs:

  • Find a program that is approved by the Vermont Board of Nursing
  • Check that about 70% of program graduates passed the VT nurse aide licensing exam
  • See if programs and classes fit your personal schedule
  • Check what the costs are, and be make sure you can afford it

Locating Vermont approved LNA programs

You will need to complete a program approved by the Vermont board of nursing before you can test for license in the state. The individual programs and class sites that are approved by the VBN change frequently, so we strongly advise that you contact the VBN to see the latest updated list of approved programs and courses. You can find the updated list here on the state boards website.

Step 3 – Satisfy Vermont’s training hours requirements

Clearly, graduation from a nursing assistant program is an immensely essential first step. Successfully completing this step in the State of Vermont means you have to finish 80 hours in the classroom and an additional 30 hours of hands-on clinical training. You are not considered eligible to sit for the state’s licensing test (the NNAAP) unless you’ve fulfilled this prerequisite..

Step 4 – Pass the NNAAP LNA license exam

In the State of Vermont, you are required to pass a nationally-administered examination for LNA licensing – the NNAAP. The examination is made up of a written part as well as a clinical section. On the timed, written part of the test, you will be required to answer multiple-choice questions about what you learned in your program. An evaluator will guide you during the clinical part of the exam, during which you’ll need to show the patient skills you’ll need while on the job. Completing your licensing requires a passing grade on both sections of the exam. The company that administers the exam is a national examination provider called PearsonVue. The locations in Vermont where the exam is typically administered are displayed here. Make sure you check the provider’s internet site for dates and times.

Written Exam and Skills Evaluation (both) $130

Written Exam ONLY (retest) $35

English Oral Exam and Skills Evaluation (both) $130

English Oral Exam ONLY (retest) $35
Skills Evaluation Exam ONLY (retest) $35

Step 5 – Become listed on the VT Nurse Aide Registry

Once you’ve taken and passed the licensing examination, the last step you must take to begin working as a LNA in Vermont is having your name listed on the Vermont Board of Nursing Nursing Aide Registry. Maintained by the Vermont Board of Nursing, this is a record of all of the nursing assistants who are eligible to work in the state. Unless your name is on this record, you won’t be approved to work. Fortunately, you generally will not have to do anything in order for this to occur. The registry is usually informed by the exam company shortly after you have passed the NNAAP. The standard wait time to get your name included on the list is a few weeks in Vermont. For solutions to all additional questions you may have, we recommend that you contact the registry with the details provided.

LNA salary and jobs in Vermont

The demand for nursing assistants is at record levels in not just Vermont, but across the entire U.S. Up through 2024, the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects a 10% increase in new job opportunities for nursing assistants in Vermont. The majority of new opportunities are likely to be created in hospitals and nursing homes. The remainder of openings may appear in the government job sector. As mentioned earlier, many of these positions might make excellent starting points for careers in nursing (e.g. RNs or LPNs). The subsequent record provides information on LNA compensation in Vermont by region.
