How you can a Become a Virginia Dental Assistant

The Virginia Board of Dentistry oversees all of the Virginia dental assistants and regulates them. There are two classes of Dental Assistants in Virginia and they are the (DA I) Dental Assistant I and (DA II) Dental Assistant II. We go in to detail about what the jobs are and the duties and tasks they can perform below.

DA I – Basic chairside supporting duties can be done under the supervision of a licensed dentist in Virginia. No specific education requirements are mandated for them under current Virginia Board of Dentistry regulations.

DAII – Candidates can become a DA II by passing an examination,complete a CODA approved and accredited dental assisting program in Virginia and then successfully earn the DANB (CDA) Certified Dental Assistant certification. DA II status can also be earned by endorsement if you have also qualified in another state as a CDA. If the aforementioned method is how you go about getting DA II status you will have to attest that you have read all regulations and codes sanctioned by the Virginia Board of Dentistry.

The ability to go about certifying to be able to assist in the monitor or the administration of any sedation of patients candidates will have to of undergone a Basic Cardiac Life Support training or one of a similar fashion given by a Virginia Dentistry Board-approved provider. Candidates can also hold current certification as a Dental Anesthesia Assistant that is licensed by the (ADSA) American Dental Society of Anesthesiology, or the (AAOMS) American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.
