Currently South Dakota has no training requirements for their dental assistants that want to work and perform what the state dental act considers to be basic chairside procedures, as long as they do them with a licensed dental professional. Hold a high school diploma or equivalent and be 18 years old and you can do these functions in South Dakota.

If you want to what is considered expanded duties in South Dakota as a dental assistant, you will have to be licensed by the (SDBD) the South Dakota State Board of Dentistry as an (ADA), otherwise known as an Advanced Dental Assistant. There are specific requirements to earn this status. You will have to graduate from a CODA-accredited dental assisting program in South Dakota (you can complete one in another state too), or candidates will have to successfully pass the (DANB) Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) exam or another South Dakota Dental Board-approved test and also have a current CPR certification. If you want to perform Monitor General and Moderate Sedation and Intravenous Line Administration or the ability to administer Nitrous Oxide, there will be extended training demands for those responsibilities.
