How to Become a Dental Assistant in New York
In the state of New York, the New York State Board of Dentistry is responsible for all dental professions and they state that you are eligible for work as an unlicensed dental assistant with limited duties that must be done under the supervision of a licensed dentist.
New York offers a limited permit for dental assistants that are one year in length and must be renewed but are not guaranteed to be renewed. They can perform all the tasks and duties of a Certified Dental Assistant in New York but as stated the permit is only for one year. To earn the permit all candidates must be a minimum of 17 years old, have their H.S. diploma/GED, and they must have taken and successfully finished a NY Dentistry Board approved 1 year dental assisting training course that consists of a minimum of 24 semester hours along with a minimum of 200 hours of training in a clinical setting. The BOCES programs are are accepted by the board and can get you on the oath to a limited permit in New York.
Becoming a Fully Certified Dental Assistant in New York
If you want to go about becoming a New York State-Licensed Certified Dental Assistant it is a great rewarding decision. All candidates for the career certification will have to fulfill criteria established above for a Limited Permit Dental Assistant and must also pass the three components of the national (DANB) (CDA) Certified Dental Assistant exam. Those components are (RHS) Radiation Health and Safety, (ICE) Infection Control, and (GC) General Chairside. Another option is to pass the (NYPDA) New York Professional Dental Assisting Examination and take and pass the (DANB) RHS and ICE exams too.
