How to become a dental assistant in Massachusetts

The oversight for dental professions in Massachusetts is done by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Dentistry. Registration with the board is mandated for al dental assistants in Massachusetts. There are four types of dental assistant in Massachusetts and we get in to the details on how you can go about earning each title below.

(OJT) On-the-Job Trained Dental Assistants – The entry level on the job trained dental assistant is just as the name suggests, trained on the job by the licensed dentist. Duties are limited in scope to support tasks and chairside assistance.

(FTDA) Formally Trained Dental Assistants – A (FTDA) formally trained dental assistant has to take and complete a CODA accredited dental assistant training program that is at least 1 year long, is recognized by (NEASC) New England Association of Schools and Colleges or that the respective dental assisting program meets the standards laid out by the Massachusetts Department of Education.

(CDA) Certified Dental Assistants – If you are CODA certified in Massachusetts you have are certified to do same duties on the job as the FTDA.

Expanded Function Dental Assistants (EFDA) – The three requirements for becoming an EFDA in Massachusetts are below:

1 – Enroll in to and complete a CODA approved dental assistant program
2 – Have a Current DANB certification
3 – Take and complete CODA accredited expanded functions courses and training.
