What is the process to become a dental assistant in Maryland?

The Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners is the government body that is in charge of all regulation and oversight for the professionals in the dental field in Maryland. There are three levels of dental asssiatnt in the state of Maryland and they are the basic dental assistant (entry level), the Dental Assistant Qualified in General Duties and the Dental Assistant Qualified in Orthodontics. We will show how can become each of them below.

The Entry Level Dental Assistant – There are not any specific requirements training for dental assistants that will be performing the basic supporting functions on patients in a dental facility. But, to do expanded tasks, like applying sealants, candidates will have to go about getting (BLS) Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certification or the American Red Cross CPR for Professional Rescuers certification, and candidates will also have to complete a Maryland Dental Board approved training where they train for a minimum of six hours in the (OSHA protocol) of infection control. On top of that, a minimum of 400 hours of clinical training and practice will have to be completed and then lastly, all candidates will have to form a written agreement with supervising dentist clearly stating the terms and conditions of the candidate’s future practice of the learned procedure.

Dental Assistant Qualified in General Duties – To become a Dental Assistant Qualified in General Duties and handle any expanded functions on the job, registration with the Maryland Dental Board is necessary to start. All candidates for this title will have two options for training and they are, the completion of a minimum 35-hour Maryland Dental Board approved training and the successful passing of the (MDG) Maryland General Dental Assisting Expanded Functions Test, or pass the DANB CDA Certified Dental Assistant test.

Dental Assistant Qualified in Orthodontics – All candidates looking at the path to become a Dental Assistant Qualified in Orthodontics will have to either finish a minimum 35-hours Maryland Dental Board approved training and successfully pass the (MDO) Maryland Orthodontic Assisting Expanded Functions Test or pass the DANB (COA) Certified Orthodontic Assistant Test.
