The steps to becoming a dental assistant in Maine

The Maine Board of Dental Practice is the regulatory body that has oversight of all the professionals in the dental field. There are currently three types of dental assistant in Maine and we give you all the details and how to become each one of them below.

1 – Entry Level Basic Dental Assistant – This position requires no training or certification and all supportive tasks can be done under supervision from the dentist.
2 – DANB CDA Certified Dental Assistant – The position of a certified dental assistant or a CDA is earned by getting your CDA certification by completing a formal training program accredited by CODA and passing the certification exam that follows.
3 – (EFDA) Expanded Functions Dental Assistant – The (EFDA) Expanded Function Dental Assistant, according to the the Maine dental practice act can do expanded functions like sealants and coronal polishing. To become a Maine Certified EFDA, you have to be at least 18 years of age, have a current certificate in CPR, graduated from HS or have your GED, have your CDA certification or be a (RDH) Registered Dental Hygienist and you will have had to complete a formal training in the Expanded Functions you are looking to perform at a Maine Dental Board approved or CODA-accredited training course.
