How to become a dental assistant in Florida.
All training for dental assisting and all dental professions and professionals are regulated and governed by the Florida Board of Dentistry. Florida as a state separates dental assistants that have been through formal dental assistant training, and those that have been trained by a dentist on the job.
The Florida Dental Practice Act dictates what entry level on the job trained dental assistants in Florida can do on the job. Florida dental assistants are trained by the dentist on the job. The supervising licensed dentist has the responsibility of making sure that the trained dental assistant gets adequate training and gets the skills for performing all the basic assisting procedures that are designated for them in the Florida State Dental Practice Act.
All the expanded duties that can be done by dental assistants in Florida are laid out in Article 466.024 of the Dental Practice Act. To do these functions on the job, all dental assistants have to go about being be formally trained, they can do this through completion of CODA-approved dental assisting program (We list them for you below) or by taking and then completing an expanded duties dental assisting training that is fully approved by the Florida Board of Dentistry.
If dental assistants want to preform any x-ray duties and tasks, they will have to finish a Florida Board of Dentistry approved dental assisting school in Florida. Three months of continuous training in radiographs under the direct supervision of a Florida-licensed dentist and the completion an approved radiology course can also pt you in a position to preform the expanded function of x-ray work in the dental office.
