How to Become a Dental Assistant in Alaska
All certifications, licenses, the oversight of the professionals and dental assistants in the dental field is managed and controlled by the Alaska Board of Dental Examiners. To become an entry level dental assistant candidates do not have to do any specific training or have any specific education to perform any of what is considered basic support duties and tasks.
That being said, if a dental assistant want to be able to perform any expanded functions (coronal polishing is an example), they will have to take an extended training and get certified in the procedure to be able to practice it on patients on the job. But, performing x-ray procedures is not one of the procedures that requires extra training and certification to be able to do on the job in the state of Alaska. Here is a link to a downloadable guide from the Dental Assisting National Board, Inc. (DANB) that has all the details of what functions can and cannot be done by all working Alaskan dental assistants on the job in the dental office.
