How to become a CNA in Wisconsin

Certified nursing assistants in Wisconsin are regulated by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services. For eligibility for any employment within the state, one has to complete the training requirements and then get listed on the Wisconsin Nursing Aide Registry hosted by PearsonVue. Wisconsin Department of Health Services handles registry duties for nurse aides in Wisconsin.

What is the process to becoming certified in Wisconsin?

Becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant in WI requires these 5 steps:

Step 1 – Get your HS diploma or G.E.D.

Earning your high school diploma is a critical fundamental to finding work in any type of skilled job. Working in the healthcare field is no exception. Even in cases where it is feasible to secure employment without finishing high school, the jobs often don’t offer much in the way of salary or chances for growth.

Where nursing assistant training courses are concerned, you’re going to also find quickly that the majority of accredited training programs want students to provide proof of a high school diploma or G.E.D. before starting classes. For that reason, whatever your professional goals, make sure that you take this step.

Step 2 – Sign up for training with a WI-approved CNA program

The body responsible for overseeing nurse assisting programs in Wisconsin is the Wisconsin Department of Health Services. In order for you to become able to challenge for certification, you must first graduate from a training program that is sanctioned by this organization.

It is very important to check out several things when deciding on where to enroll for classes. Consider the following things when comparing one program against another:

  • Enroll in a program that is approved by the WDHS
  • Confirm that at least 70% of program graduates passed the WI Certification Exam
  • See if available courses fit your schedule
  • Find out what the courses cost, and make sure you can afford it

Step 3 – Satisfy the state of WI training hours requirement

Obviously, graduation from your nurse aide training program is an essential first step. Programs in Wisconsin require you to meet the state minimum of 120 hours in a hands-on clinical setting, as well as 32 hours in class.

These mandated hours need to be met before you are eligible to challenge the NNAAP.

Step 4 – Pass the NNAAP CNA certification exam

In Wisconsin, you will be required to pass a nationally-recognized exam for CNA certification – the NNAAP . The examination includes a written and clinical segment.

The written section of the examination consists of multiple-choice questions about material you covered during the course of your classes, and must be completed in a set time frame. A test giver will guide you through the clinical part of the examination, where you’ll be asked to demonstrate the patient skills you’ll need while working. You have to pass both sections of the test to get your certification.

The test is administered by the national assessment provider PearsonVue. You will need to check with the service to find out about test dates and times for when the upcoming exams are going to be given.

The cost of the full exam costs $115 while the skills examination costs $70 and the oral or written examination, $45.

Step 5 – Get listed on the WI Certified Nurse Aide Registry

After passing the certification exam, the final step you must take to begin earning a living as a nursing assistant in Wisconsin is getting your name listed on the nurse aide registry. Maintained by PearsonVue for the state of Wisconsin, this is a checklist of all of the certified nursing assistants that are approved for employment in the state. Unless your name is on this record, you won’t be eligible to work. This step is often taken care of on your behalf, however.

Immediately after you’ve passed the NNAAP, the testing provider will notify the registry of your brand new status. The normal wait time to get your name placed on the list is just a few weeks in Wisconsin.

Don’t hesitate to get a hold of your local registry personally with the information below if you should have further questions.

CNA salary and jobs in Wisconsin

There’s a higher than average demand for CNAs around the United States and in Wisconsin. Whereas the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects a 17% increase in brand new openings for nursing assistants across the nation through 2024, the organization is expecting to find a 13% growth in Wisconsin. Popular workplaces are: hospitals, nursing homes and general care facilities. The balance of openings may appear in the government job market.

The opportunity to work under licensed practical nurses (LPNs) and registered nurses (RNs) also makes being a CNA an excellent stepping-stone to different opportunities in nursing in Wisconsin.
