What’s the process to become certified in Washington?

To become a Nursing Assistant in WA requires these 5 steps:

Step 1 – Get your high school diploma or G.E.D.

Earning your high school diploma is a basic foundation to becoming employed in any type of specialized position. Finding a position in the medical field is no exception. You can find positions in the field that can be secured without a high school education, but they typically offer very little room for advancement.

Where nursing assistant training courses are concerned, you will also discover quickly that the majority of authorized programs ask students to supply proof of at least a G.E.D. prior to starting classes. So, no matter your career goal, be sure that you finish this step.

Step 2 – Enroll in training with a WA-approved CNA program

Nurse assisting programs in Washington are required by state guidelines to be approved by the Washington State Department of Health. You need to graduate from a program accredited by this organization to be eligible to test to become certified in the state.

It is very important to consider several factors when figuring out where to sign up for training courses. Think about the following features in a program when comparing it to another:

  • Find a program that is approved by the Washington State Board of Nursing
  • See that about 70% of program grads passed the WA nurse aide certification exam
  • Check to see if programs and classes fit your personal schedule
  • Find out what the real life costs are, and be sure that you can afford it the costs

Step 3 – Satisfy the state’s individual training hours requirement

Clearly, graduation from a nurse aide training program is an immensely important first step. Courses in Washington require you to finish the state’s mandatory minimum of 120 hours in a hands-on clinical environment, and 55 hours in the classroom.

You aren’t considered eligible to challenge the state’s certification test (the NNAAP) unless you have satisfied this requirement.

Step 4 – Pass the NNAAP CNA certification exam

The official CNA certification examination given in Washington is the NNAAP. The examination is made of both a clinical and written section.

The written part of each test is timed, and requires you to respond to multiple-choice questions on the content that was discussed in the course of your educational program. An evaluator will guide you during the clinical section of the test, where you’ll be asked to show the basic skills you would need when working. You have to pass both sections of the test to earn your certification.

PearsonVue is the national examination provider that administers the test for future nursing assistants in the state. To see when the upcoming exam dates are at each site, please talk to the provider directly.

Fees must be submitted with the individual application. $110 is the fee for the full examination.

Step 5 – Get listed on the WA Certified Nursing Aide Registry

Washington State Department of Health

111 Israel Rd SE, Tumwater, WA 98501

Once you’ve taken and passed the certification examination, the last step you will need to complete to start earning a living as a nursing assistant in Washington is having your name added to the Aging and Long-Term Support Administration nursing aide registry. This is a record of all nursing assistants in the state, and is maintained through the Washington State Department of Health. State regulations mandate that you must be on this record prior to working. No action is usually necessary on your part in order to make this take place.

The registry is usually informed by the examination service shortly after you have passed the NNAAP. In Washington, your name is normally included on the record within a few weeks of passing the certification examination.

If you have any questions about the registry, or your standing on it, you may contact it directly with the details provided below.
