How to become a CNA in Utah

Nursing assistants in Utah are regulated by the Utah Nursing Registry. For eligibility for any employment within the state, one has to complete the training requirements and then get listed on the Utah Certified Nursing Aide Registry. The Utah Health Technology Certification Center handles registry duties for nurse aides in Utah.

What is the process to become certified in Utah?

Becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant in UT requires these specific steps:

Step 1 – Have your High School Diploma diploma or G.E.D.

The very first step towards whatever position you pursue should be finishing a high school diploma. When it comes to occupations in the medical field, this is especially true. You can find openings in the field that can be held without a high school education, but they usually offer very little room for growth.

While shopping for a nursing assistant certification class, you will also find that almost all educators require students to hold a diploma or G.E.D. prior to registration. And so, no matter your career goal, be sure that you finish this first step.

Step 2 – Enroll in training at a Utah approved CNA course

Nursing assistant programs in Utah are obligated by state guidelines to be approved by the Utah Nursing Aide Registry. Only graduates who complete their classes at a program sanctioned by this organization are able to challenge for certification.

Picking out the right program for your specific circumstances typically requires a few considerations. You’ll want to look at the following as you compare classes:

  • Pick a program that is approved by the Utah Nursing Registry
  • See that at least 70% of program grads passed the UT nurse aide exam
  • Check to see if the programs fit your schedule
  • Check real life costs and be absolutely sure that you can afford them

Step 3 – Meet the state’s training hours requirement

Graduation from an accredited nursing assistant class is vital, because you won’t be able to move on to the following step unless you have done so. Programs in Utah will require you to satisfy the state’s mandatory minimum of 100 hours in a hands-on clinical environment, as well as 24 hours in class.

You cannot be eligible to challenge the unless you have finished the required hours.

Step 4 – Pass the Utah CNA certification exam

Certified nursing assistants in Utah need to pass the cna exam in order to earn their certification. The test includes both a written and clinical segment.

The written part of the test consists of multiple-choice questions on things you covered during your training, and has to be finished in a set time period. An evaluator will guide you through the clinical part of the test, during which you’ll be asked to demonstrate the patient skills you are going to need when on the job. You have to pass both sections of the exam in order to receive your certification.

The exam is given by the national examination provider Testmaster. Go to their website here to see and learn about examination dates and times for when the upcoming examinations will be given. There is also a link to an updated PDF with tons of great information. Information changes and moves around a lot and we have found this to be the best spot to stay alert and in tune with what has changed.

All applications have a $75 fee in the state of Utah for aspiring CNAs.

Step 5 – Become listed on the Utah Certified Nurse Aide Registry

The last step in the process of becoming eligible for employment as a CNA in Utah is making sure that your name is recorded on the Utah Nursing Aide Registry. The registry is a record operated by the Utah Nursing Aide Registry which shows the names of all of the nursing assistants in the state. State regulations mandate that your name must be on this record prior to working. No activity is usually required by you in order to make this take place.

The testing provider will normally inform the registry as your representative right after you pass the Utah CNA exam. The normal wait time to have your name included on the list is few weeks in Utah.

For answers to all additional questions you have, we recommend that you talk to the registry with the details provided.
