How to become a CNA in Texas

In Texas, (CNAs) Certified Nursing Assistants work under the jurisdiction of state of Texas. The Texas Department of Health and Human Services who maintains the state’s registry and regulates CNA certification in the state, and regulates training programs.
In order to be eligible to work as a nursing assistant, you must be listed on the Texas Nursing Aide Registry Registry.

Step 1 – Have a H.S. diploma or G.E.D. equivalent

Currently in Texas there are not any minimum education requirements for becoming a Texas CNA. The only requirements there are currently are to pass a criminal background check and that they are not on the (EMR) Employee Misconduct Registry or that they have a “Revoked” Status in the Texas Nurse Aide Registry.

Step 2 – Enroll in to TX approved training CNA program

Nursing assistant programs in Texas are obligated by state law to be approved by the Texas Department of Health and Human Services. You must complete a program accredited by the Texas Department of Health and Human Services to become approved to test to become certified in the state as a nurse aide or assistant.

Step 3 – Satisfy Texas requirements for training hours

Texas has a requirement that all candidates who want to become nurse aides will have to finish the state minimum of 100 hours in a hands-on clinical setting, as well as 40 hours of in class education. The required hours must be satisfied before you can be eligible to challenge the (NNAAP) National Nurse Aide Assessment Program.

Step 4 – Pass the NNAAP CNA certification exam

Nursing assistants in Texas need to pass the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) to receive their certification. The examination contains both a written and clinical section.

PearsonVue is the national examination provider that administers the examination to aspiring nurse aides in the state. Regular monthly evaluation locations in Texas are typically in the cities listed here.

The costs for the full evaluation is $95. The cost for the skills test is $70 and the oral or written test is $25.

Step 5 – Get Yourself on the Texas Nurse Aide Registry

The last step in the process of becoming eligible to work as a nursing assistant in Texas is ensuring that your name is recorded on the Texas Department of Health and Human Services. The registry is a record of all employment eligible nurse aides in Texas that is operated by the Texas Department of Health and Human Services. PearsonVue will contact the registry after candidates have taken and successfully pass the exam for their CNA certifications. In about two weeks your name will be added and you can go ahead and look for work as a CNA in Texas.
