If you would like to enroll in one of the accredited Certified Nursing Assistant courses in Oregon, you’ll be entering a career in the Oregon healthcare industry that is one of the most-popular in the state and in the country as a whole. Nursing aides and assistants are enjoying some of the highest demand of any career in allied health! The field of nurse assisting has become a popular first step as its education and training prerequisites are easier to satisfy and the work provides good interaction with other team members.

How to become a CNA in Oregon

All nursing assistants in Oregon are overseen and regulated by the Oregon Board of Nursing. For any employment within Oregon, you must complete any training requirements then, get listed on the Oregon Board of Nursing Nursing Aide Registry that is managed by the Oregon Board of Nursing.

What’s the process to become certified in Oregon?

Becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant in Oregon requires these 5 steps:

Step 1 – Have a high school diploma or G.E.D.

Earning your high school diploma is a critical foundation to becoming employed in any type of specialized job. Working in the medical field is no exception. There are some openings in the industry that may be secured without a high school education, but they typically have very little room for growth.

On top of that, most CNA courses call for applicants to be high school graduates or hold a G.E.D. in their admissions requirements. Take the time to finish this first basic step, and you will prevent a large number of barriers during your career.

Step 2 – Enroll in a Oregon State Board approved CNA course

As previously mentioned, nursing assistant training in Oregon is managed by the Oregon State Board of Nursing. You must graduate from a program accredited by this body if you wish to become approved to test to become certified in the state.

It’s important to check for several things when figuring out where to enroll for classes. When comparing your choices, you may want to take the following into account:

  • Locate approved training by the Oregon Board of Nursing
  • Check that 70% of program grads passed Oregon Nursing Assistant Competency Exam
  • Make sure that any classes fit your personal schedule
  • Check costs and see if it is affordable for you

Locating Oregon approved CNA programs

One must complete a training program approved by the Oregon Board of Nursing before you can test for license in the state. The individual programs and class sites that are approved by the OBN are listed below. We think it is a good idea that you visit the OBN website to see the latest details of training and regulation.

Step 3 – Meet all training hours requirements for Oregon

Graduation from an authorized nursing assistant program is critical, as you won’t be able to move forward to the next step without having done so. Successfully taking this step in the State of Oregon requires you to finish 155 hours in class and an additional 75 hours of hands-on clinical training.

You aren’t deemed to be eligible to take the state’s certification test (the Oregon Nursing Assistant Competency Examination) unless you have satisfied this prerequisite.

Step 4 – Pass the Oregon Nursing Assistant Competency Exam

Nursing assistants in Oregon need to pass the Oregon Nursing Assistant Competency Examination in order to complete their certification. The examination contains a clinical and written part.

On the written portion of the examination, you will need to answer multiple-choice questions on what you learned in training. An evaluator will lead you through the clinical portion of the examination, during which you’ll need to show the basic competencies you will need while working. You must pass each section of the exam to earn your certification.

The group that gives the examination is a national assessment service called Headmaster LLP. The sites in Oregon where the exam is typically given are listed here. To learn when the upcoming exam dates and times are at each location, you need to speak to the service directly.

The full CNA test costs $106. For $35 more you can request an oral exam. All retakes of full exams are $70. The retake of the skills only is $45.

Step 5 – Become listed on the Oregon Nurse Aide Registry

The last step in becoming approved to work as a certified nursing assistant in Oregon is having your name included on the Oregon State Board of Nursing. Maintained by the Oregon State Board of Nursing, this is a list of all of the certified nursing assistants who are approved to work in the state. State laws and regulations mandate that your name have to be on this list prior to working. Fortunately, you usually won’t need to do anything for this to occur.

Shortly after you have passed the Oregon Nursing Assistant Competency Examination, the examination company will notify the registry about your new status. In Oregon, you are typically included on the list within a few weeks of passing the certification exam.

For solutions to any other questions you might have, we suggest that you get in touch with the registry using the details provided.
