For those who might be interested in furthering their careers the nursing field, this is a good first step since its education and training requirements are easier to meet and the work itself provides good opportunities for close interaction with other positions.

How to become a CNA in North Carolina

The state of North Carolina recognizes nurse aides and assistants at multiple levels. The level Nurse Aide I is the standard credential awarded and is the required certification for nursing home duties. The Department of Health and Human Services oversees this certification.

The level of Geriatric Nurse Aide certification in North Carolina is also given by the (NCDHHS) NC Department of Health and Human Services. It is not mandatory for employment in a nursing home setting. NCDHHS developed this to meet needs identified by the North Carolina Institute of Medicine’s Long-Term Care Task Force.

The level of Nurse Aide II is given by the North Carolina Board of Nursing under the status of unlicensed assistive personnel. The Board of Nursing has provided a list of duties at NA I and NA II level here.

What’s is the process to become a CNA in North Carolina?

Becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant in North Carolina requires these individual steps:

Step 1 – Have your HS diploma or G.E.D.

Regardless of the job you decide to pursue, receiving a high school diploma should be considered the first step. Working in the healthcare field is no different. And even in the cases where it’s feasible to find a position without a high school diploma, the positions usually do not offer much in salary or chances for promotion.

Where nursing assistant training programs are concerned, you may also notice early on that the majority of accredited training programs want applicants to give proof of a high school diploma or G.E.D. prior to starting classes. And so, no matter your professional career goals, make sure that you complete this step.

Step 2 – Take a North Carolina approved CNA training program

Nurse assisting programs in North Carolina are obligated by state guidelines to be accredited by the (NCDHHS) North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. Only students who finish their education at a program sanctioned by this organization will be allowed to challenge for certification.

There are several things you will need to consider if you are selecting a course to register for. Think about the following features in a program when comparing it to another:

  • Locate approved training by the NC Dept. of Health and Human Services
  • It is smart to make sure that at least 70% of program grads passed NNAAP exam
  • Make sure to see if the classes will fit your schedule
  • See if the costs are affordable for your budget

Locating North Carolina approved CNA courses

One must complete a training program approved by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services before you can test for license in the state. The specific individual course sites hat are approved by the NCDHHS change very often so we think it is a great idea that you visit the NCDHHS here to see the most current list of approved CNA programs in NC.

Step 3 – Meet training hour requirement for North Carolina

Clearly, graduating from a nursing assistant training program is an important step. Courses in North Carolina require you to satisfy the state minimum of 16 hours in a hands-on clinical setting, and 75 hours in class.

The required hours must be satisfied before you can be permitted to take the NNAAP.

Step 4 – Pass the NNAAP examination

Nursing assistants in North Carolina are required to pass the NNAAP in order to complete their certification. The examination contains a written section as well as a clinical part.

The written segment of the examination includes multiple-choice questions about things you learned in your training, and must be done in a set period of time. In the clinical portion of the exam, you will be asked to show basic care techniques for the evaluator. You need to pass both sections of the exam in order to receive your certification.

The examination is administered by the national examination provider PearsonVue. Monthly test locations in North Carolina are typically in the metropolitan areas noted here. You should ask the service to find out about examination schedules for when the upcoming tests will be given.

It will cost $101 to take the full exam. All skills exam retakes will cost $77 with oral or written exam retakes costing $24.

Step 5 – Be listed on the North Carolina Nurse Aide Registry

The final step in the process of becoming eligible for employment as a nursing assistant in North Carolina is making sure that your name gets posted on the N.C. Nurse Aide I Registry. The registry is a record managed by the (DHHS) Department of Health and Human Services that shows the names of any certified nursing assistants in the state. Your name has to be on this listing to be able to become employed in the state. Fortunately, you generally do not have to do anything in order for this to occur.

The examination provider will typically alert the registry on your behalf shortly after you pass the NNAAP. In North Carolina, your name is typically included on the checklist within a couple of weeks of passing the certification test.

Don’t hesitate to contact your local registry personally with the information below if you have other questions.
