How to become a CNA in New York

New York’s Certified Nurse Aides must meet training and examination requirements set by the (NYSDOH) New York State Department of Health and follow the steps we show you below. The NY Department of Health contracts Prometric to maintain and manage the nurse aide registry in the Empire State.

Step 1 – Satisfy the Minimum Requirements for Your CNA Program in New York

The minimum requirements for enrollment in to a nurse aide program in New York are detailed below.

HS diploma/GED
Be at least 18
Pass background check
Have minimum level scores on TABE (or equivalent test)
Current immunizations
Negative TB skin test
Pass physical examination

Step 2 – Enroll in a NY approved CNA course

Step 3 – Meet your training hour requirement for New York

New York requires that you will have to not only complete your accredited training but you will need to complete 100 hours in class and an additional 30 hours of hands-on clinical training. You will not become eligible to take the NY CNA certification exam until you have finished all of the mandatory hours.

Step 4 – Pass the NY CNA certification exam

Nursing assistants in New York must pass the NY CNA certification exam to earn proper licensing. The company contracted by New York to give the exam is Prometric. At this link here, you’ll see a checklist of the areas in New York where the test is normally given. You should refer to the company to find out about exam dates and times for when the upcoming tests are going to be.

It will cost $135 to take the full examination. All skills exam retakes will cost $68 with the written exam retakes costing $57 and the oral exam costing $67.

Step 5 – Get listed on the New York Nurse Aide Registry

The New York Nurse Aide Registry managed by Prometric. Unless your name is on this list, you cannot be approved to work in NY as a CNA. Once you have passed the exam, Prometric add you to the registry. The timetable for the process is about 1-2 weeks in length.
