In the article below we are going to show what CNA classes in Maine can do for you and your career. Among those who may be interested in advancing into the healthcare profession, this is a popular entry-level position as its education prerequisites are easier to meet and the work provides good opportunities for exposure to other team members.

How to become a CNA in Maine

The state of Maine Certified Nursing Assistants are under the control of the Maine Department of Health and Human Services. One qualifies by completing state approved training, passing the Maine CNA competency test, and lastly clearing a criminal background check. The Maine Board of Education oversee the testing for nursing assistant certification in the state of Maine.

What’s the process to become certified in Maine?

Becoming a CNA in Maine takes these 5 steps:

Step 1 – Have your H.S. diploma or a G.E.D.

Receiving your high school diploma is one of the important fundamentals to becoming employed in any specialized position. This really is true when considering working in medical care. While it is possible to secure certain entry-level jobs without a diploma or G.E.D., you’ll eventually discover that your chances for growth are minimal.

Where nursing assistant training programs are concerned, you’re going to also discover quickly that the majority of authorized programs want applicants to supply proof of a high school diploma or G.E.D. prior to starting classes. For these reasons, if you’re thinking about earning a living in medical care, it is a wise decision to finish this important step.

Step 2 – Register for a Maine approved CNA program

As mentioned, nursing assistant training in Maine is governed by the Maine Registry of Certified Nursing Assistants & Direct Care Workers. Only those students who complete their schooling at a program approved by this body will be allowed to challenge for certification.

There are several things you need to consider when selecting a program to enroll in. As you compare your options, you may want to take the following into consideration:

  • Take approved training accredited by the ME Dept. of Health and Human Services
  • Check and see that least 70% of program grads passed the CNA competency test
  • See that programs fit your schedule and needs
  • See that costs are within your budget

Find and attend approved CNA training

By completing a Maine Dept. of Health and Human Services approved CNA training program opens you up to test for a certification in the state. All programs approved by the ME Dept. of Health are listed below.

Step 3 – Meet the individual training requirement for Maine

Obviously, graduating from your nursing assistant program is an immensely important first step. Successfully completing this step in the State of Maine requires you to complete 180 hours in the classroom and another 70 hours of hands-on clinical instruction.

These mandated hours need to be met before you are eligible to take the Maine CNA competency test.

Step 4 – Pass Maine CNA competency test

The official nurse aide certification examination used in Maine is the Maine CNA competency test. This exam requires test takers to finish a segment consisting of written questions, in addition to a clinical demo.

In the written, timed portion of the exam, you’ll be asked to answer multiple-choice problems about what you were taught in training. On the clinical part of the examination, you will be required to demonstrate patient care techniques for an observer. Getting your certification requires a passing score on both sections of the test.

The exam is administered by the Maine Department of Education. To determine when the upcoming test dates are at every venue, be sure to contact the board of education directly.

For test fees contact the testing facility.

Step 5 – Get listed on the Maine Nurse Aide Registry
