The demand is growing and growing for student enrollment in to CNA classes in Connecticut! Find out all the juicy details with our latest article on becoming a nursing assistant in the great state of Connecticut. Among those who are interested in advancing into the entry level medical field, this is a popular first step as its education prerequisites are comparatively low and the work provides good exposure to other positions.

How to become a CNA in Connecticut

All Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) employment in the state work under the regulatory guidelines of the Connecticut Department of Health (DPH). Eligibility for work as a nursing assistant requires being listed on the Connecticut Nurse Aide Registry.

How do I become certified in Connecticut?

The process for earning your nursing assistant certification in the Constitution State consists of the following five steps:

Step 1 – Graduate from high school or pass the G.E.D.

Regardless of the career you decide to go after, getting a high school diploma should always be considered the first step. Finding a position in the healthcare field is no exception. And even in cases when it’s possible to find a position without your high school diploma, the jobs often do not offer much in terms of compensation or opportunities for promotion.

While shopping for a CNA certification course, you may find that most programs require trainees to hold a diploma or G.E.D. before registration. For these reasons, if you are interested in earning a living in healthcare, it’s always a good idea to complete this important first step.

Step 2 – Find courses through a DPH-approved CNA program

As mentioned, nursing assistant education in Connecticut is governed by the Connecticut Department of Health (DPH). Only students who complete their education at a program sanctioned by this organization will be able to challenge for certification in the state.

It is important to consider several things when deciding on where to register for courses. Take into account the following features in a program when comparing it to another:

  • Ensure that the program is approved by the Connecticut DPH
  • Make sure that at a minimum of 70% of program graduates passed the state’s Nurse Aide Competency Exam
  • See if available courses fit your schedule
  • Find out what the course costs, and be sure you can afford it

Step 3 – Finish the state’s mandated training hours

Graduating from a formal training program is required to become a CNA. Successfully completing this step in the State of Connecticut requires you to complete 100 hours in the classroom and another 50 hours of hands-on clinical instruction.

You will not be able to sit for the Connecticut Nurse Aide Competency Exam until you have completed the required hours.

Step 4 – Pass the Connecticut Nurse Aide Competency Exam

In Connecticut, you will be required to pass a nationally-administered test for nurse aide certification – the Nurse Aide Competency Exam. The exam includes both a written and clinical segment.

The written section of each test must be completed in a set amount of time, and requires you to answer multiple-choice problems on the material which was covered in the course of your training course. An evaluator will direct you during the clinical portion of the test, where you will have to show the patient competencies you will need when working. A passing score on each section of the exam is necessary if you wish to become certified.

The examination is administered by the national testing provider ProMetric. Listed below, you’ll find a list of the towns and cities in Connecticut where the examination is typically administered. You will need to refer to the company to get the information about exam schedules for when the next examinations are going to be administered.

  • Litchfield
  • Hamden
  • New London
  • Derby
  • Wethersfield
  • Norwich
  • Waterbury

In the state of Connecticut the exam costs $110 for candidates who choose the written knowledge test. It costs $120 for those who choose the oral knowledge test. If you have to retake the tests the fee is $65 to retake the skills examination, $45 to retake the written examination and $55 to retake the oral examination. Candidates who are exempted from Connecticut testing will have to pay a $55 fee with their individual applications before testing.

Step 5 – Become listed on the Connecticut Nurse Aide Registry

The very last step in becoming eligible to work as a CNA in Connecticut is getting your name added on the Connecticut Nurse Aide Registry. The registry is a record managed by the Department of Health that displays the names of any nursing assistants in the state. Your name has to appear on this listing in order to work in the state. No action is usually necessary by you to make this happen.

The assessment service will usually notify the registry for you shortly after you pass the Nurse Aide Competency Exam. In Connecticut, your name is normally added to the list within 10 business days of passing the certification examination.

For answers to the other concerns you may have, we suggest that you speak to the registry using the information provided.
