CNA training in Arizona is becoming real popular for many reasons. First is the amazing growth predicted from bls.gov. Second is the fact that the job is a great stepping stone to other great medical field careers. Below we cover all the necessary training info and how to go about having success in your programs. Lets get started today!

How to become a CNA in Arizona

In the State of Arizona, the position of Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is regulated by the Arizona State Board of Nursing (AZBN). The state has recently also added the designation of Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA) to those nurse assisting professionals who submit to a more comprehensive background check.

Employment as a CNA or LNA in Arizona requires having one’s name listed on the Arizona Nurse Aide Registry, which is maintained by the aforementioned AZBN.

What is the process to become certified in Arizona?

The process for becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant or Licensed Nursing Assistant in Arizona consists the following five steps:

Step 1 – Complete high school or earn your G.E.D.

No matter which career you choose to pursue, earning a high school diploma should be considered the initial step. Working in the medical field is no different. And even in the few cases where it is possible to gain employment without your high school diploma, the positions normally do not offer much in the way of salary or opportunities for promotion.

Where nursing assistant training courses are concerned, you will also find early on that almost all accredited training programs ask students to give proof of at least a G.E.D. prior to beginning classes. So, no matter your professional goals, make sure that you take this step.

Step 2 – Enroll in an AZBN-approved CNA training program

The body responsible for overseeing nurse assisting classes in Arizona is the Arizona State Board of Nursing (AZBN). Only those students who complete their education at a program accredited by this organization are able to challenge for certification in the state.

Picking out the best program for your particular situation usually involves some considerations. As you compare your possible choices, you may want to take the following into consideration:

  • Find a program that is approved by the AZBN
  • Ensure that at least 70% of program graduates passed the Arizona nursing assistant certification exam
  • See if available courses fit your schedule
  • Find out what the course costs, and be sure you can afford it

Step 3 – Satisfy the state’s clinical and classroom hours requirement

Graduating from a formal program is mandatory to become a CNA. Training programs in Arizona will require you to finish the state’s mandatory minimum of 80 hours in a hands-on clinical environment, and 140 hours in class.

You are not eligible to take the Arizona Nursing Assistant Certification Exam until you have completed all of the required hours.

Step 4 – Pass the Arizona Nursing Assistant Certification Exam

Certified nursing assistants in Arizona need to pass the Arizona Nursing Assistant Certification Exam to earn their certification. This exam asks test takers to complete a segment consisting of written questions, and a clinical demo.

The written segment of the exam includes multiple-choice questions about stuff you learned in the course of your classes, and must be completed in a scheduled time frame. The clinical part asks you to display the skills you’ve learned in a clinical setting. Finishing your certification requires a passing score on each section of the test.

The exam is administered by the national assessment provider Headmaster, LLP. The locations in Arizona where the assessment is typically administered have been detailed below. Make sure you refer to the company’s internet site for schedules.

  • Phoenix
  • Mesa
  • Tempe
  • Flagstaff
  • Tucson

In the state of Arizona there is not a mandatory application fee for candidates applying by exams. But, applicants have to pay $50 for their certificate issued as a document. (Status can be verified online.)

Applicants who wish to have their fingerprints processed before passing the examination will also have to pay an additional $50 fee.

Application packets may be mailed or delivered to the Board office. The office is located in Phoenix. Click here to see all the applications and forms necessary for testing.

Step 5 – Get listed on the Arizona Nurse Aide Registry

Once you’ve taken and passed the certification examination, the last step you need to complete to start earning a living as a nursing assistant in Arizona is having your name added on the Arizona Nurse Aide Registry. Maintained by the AZBN, this is a listing of all of the certified nursing assistants who are eligible to work in the state. State guidelines mandate that you have to be on this record prior to working. Fortunately, you typically do not have to do anything at all for this to occur.

Shortly after you have passed the Arizona Nursing Assistant Exam, the testing service will inform the registry of your new status. In the majority of cases, your wait time to finish this procedure in Arizona is no more than two weeks.

Below is a link to registry website. For answers to all other concerns you may have, we recommend that you contact the registry using the information supplied.
