How to become a CNA in Oregon
All nursing assistants in Oregon are overseen and regulated by the Oregon Board of Nursing. There re three levels of nurse assistant in Oregon. They are CNA level 1, CNA level 2 and a certified medication aide. Each level has slightly more expanded training and responsibilities. For example the medication aide can give education to patients, so training in pharmacy technology is required. A CNA level 2 is a CNA level 1 and has slightly more training and can have more responsibilities.
Step 1 – Satisfy Your Oregon CNA Training Prerequisites
CNA levels 1 and 2 require the following step be taken and fulfilled for acceptance and enrollment in to courses.
Be able to speak English proficiently
Have negative TB skin or blood test within one year of your registration
Pass background check
Pass drug test
Have 2 doses of MMR vaccine or have immunity via blood titer
Have current CPR certificate prior to starting clinical training
Step 2 – Enroll in a Oregon State Board approved CNA course
One must complete a training program approved by the Oregon Board of Nursing before you can test for a CNA license. Step 3 – Meet all training hours requirements for Oregon
The State of Oregon requires you to finish 155 hours in class and an additional 75 hours of hands-on clinical training. You aren’t going to be considered eligible to take the state’s certification test (the Oregon Nursing Assistant Competency Examination) unless you have satisfied this prerequisite.
Step 4 – Pass the Oregon Nursing Assistant Competency Exam
Nursing assistants in Oregon need to pass the Oregon Nursing Assistant Competency Examination in order to complete their certification. Headmaster LLP gives all the certification exams for nurse aides of all levels in Oregon. The sites in Oregon where the exam is typically given are listed here.
The full CNA test costs $106. For $35 more you can request an oral exam. All retakes of full exams are $70. The retake of the skills only is $45.
Step 5 – Become listed on the Oregon Nurse Aide Registry
Maintained by the Oregon State Board of Nursing, the CNA registry in Oregon is a list of all of the certified nursing assistants who are approved to work in Oregon. State laws and regulations mandate that your name have to be on this list prior to working. Fortunately, you usually won’t need to do anything for this to occur.
Headmaster LLP will notify the registry about your new status. In Oregon, you are typically included on the list within a few weeks of passing the certification exam.
