How to become a CNA in Connecticut
All Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) employment in the state work under the regulatory guidelines of the Connecticut Department of Health (DPH). Eligibility for work as a nursing assistant requires being listed on the Connecticut Nurse Aide Registry.
There are 6 paths to becoming a CNA in Connecticut. We show you them below:
1 – First Time Nursing Assistant – Attend formal training and get certified
2 – Nurse/Student Nurse – If a nursing student has met the 100 hour training requirement and passed CNA exam to get listed on CT CNA registry
3 – Out-of-State CNA – If candidate has taken and passed an approved CNA program in a state other than the state of Connecticut within the last 24 months, the program had at least 100 hours of training. If the candidate did not take the certification exam they will have to take it in Connecticut.
4 – CNA with a Lapsed Certification – Candidates must retake and pass the CNA certification exam to be placed on the Registry if they let their CT CNA certification lapse.
5 – Completed CNA Training and Passed the CT Certification Exam in the Last 24 Months – If a candidate completed a minimum 100-hour CNA program accredited by the CT Dept. of Health within the last 24 months and passed the CT CNA certification exam they can then apply to be put in the Nurse Aide Registry in Connecticut.
6 – Reciprocity for Out of State Nursing Assistants – Send a completed CNA Registry Application to Prometric and you can be a certified nurse assistant in Connecticut if you are a CNA in another state in good standing.

Connecticut approved CNA training programs have a requirement that students have at least 100 hours of training. The CNA training has to include basic theoretical training and clinical training that cover 25 competency skills in nurse assisting. The clinical component has to be offered in a licensed Rest Home with Nursing Supervision setting or if it is in a licensed Chronic and Convalescent Nursing Home Training program must be supervised by a (RN) Registered Nurse who meets state experience requirements. An (LPN) Licensed Practical Nurse may be a CNA educational clinical trainer if they are under the direct supervision of the (RN) Registered Nurse and they are still able to meet any state experience requirements demanded by the state of Connecticut. Standardized training program curriculum in CT has been created by the Connecticut Department of Public Health, which states that all CNA training courses must cover these topics at a minimum.

Step 3 – Finish the state’s mandated training hours
Graduating from a formal training program is required to become a CNA. Successfully completing this step in the State of Connecticut requires you to complete 100 hours in the classroom and another 50 hours of hands-on clinical instruction. You will not be able to sit for the Connecticut Nurse Aide Competency Exam until you have completed the required hours
Step 4 – Pass the Connecticut Nurse Aide Competency Exam
In Connecticut, you will be required to pass a nationally-administered test for nurse aide certification – the Nurse Aide Competency Exam. The exam includes both a written and clinical segment. In the state of Connecticut the exam costs $110 for candidates who choose the written knowledge test. It costs $120 for those who choose the oral knowledge test. If you have to retake the tests the fee is $65 to retake the skills examination, $45 to retake the written examination and $55 to retake the oral examination. Candidates who are exempted from Connecticut testing will have to pay a $55 fee with their individual applications before testing.
Step 5 – Become listed on the Connecticut Nurse Aide Registry
The very last step in becoming eligible to work as a CNA in Connecticut is getting your name added on the Connecticut Nurse Aide Registry. The registry is a record managed by the Department of Health that displays the names of any nursing assistants in the state. Your name has to appear on this listing in order to work in the state. No action is usually necessary by you to make this happen.
The assessment service will usually notify the registry for you shortly after you pass the Nurse Aide Competency Exam. In Connecticut, your name is normally added to the list within 10 business days of passing the certification examination.
