The New York Department of Health controls all aspects of the EMT indistry and the EMT training in New York. If you want to get in to the growing field within NY allied health, you will have to fulfill the state requirements for certification. New York has their own certification exam but use standards at a national level for their EMT programs. We will walk through every step to become an EMT in NY below!

The Exact Process to Become an EMT in New York

There are three levels of EMTs in New York and they are as listed below:

(CFR) Certified First Responder
(EMT-B) Emergency Medical Technician – Basic
(AEMT-I) Advanced Emergency Medical Technician – Intermediate
(AEMT-CC) Advanced Emergency Medical Technician – Critical Care
(AEMT-P) Advanced Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic

Candidates for licensing will have to complete a written certification test and a skills test, or PSE. You will be given your testing date by your training instructor. Follow each step listed below and you will become an EMT in NY before you know it!

Step 1: Complete a NY EMT training class

To become eligible to sit for for certification, you’ll need to first complete state-accredited EMT training in New York. Prior to taking the examination, you must give evidence of graduation from a program in the last two years, and have to additionally be placed on the National Registry (read below). Junior colleges, technical colleges, hospitals and universities all feature Emergency Medical Technician training in New York. It’s also possible to take them at firemen and police training academies.

Step 2: Earn a CPR-BLS credential

If you want to become an EMT in New York you will need your CPR certification before you can take your certification examinations. Most courses include CPR training in their program. If your program does not offer CPR training be sure to check with your school to get referred to an outside source for your CPR certificate.

Step 3: Pass the New York PSE Exam and the Written Exam

New York EMT students and trainees have to pass a written exam and a physical skills exam. The state of NY has their own certification testing. Once you pass the PSE you can take the written certification test. There is a fee to take the exam. Once you pass the exams you can apply for licensure in NY. Results from the written exam tale 4-6 weeks to come back in most cases.
