How to Become a Dental Assistant in New Hampshire
The (NHBDE) Board of Dental Examiners of New Hampshire, under the Office of Professional Licensure and Certification is in charge of all dental professionals in New Hampshire. There are five levels of dental assistant in the state of New Hampshire, and we will go in to detail about them below.
Basic Dental Assistant
The basic and traditional dental assistant in New Hampshire performs the basic dental procedures that the state dental practice act details that they can do. All duties must be done under the direct supervision of a licensed dentist in the office at the time the tasks are done. No education or training is required at this level of dental assisting in New Hampshire.
DANB (CDA) Certified Dental Assistant
The DANB (CDA) Certified Dental Assistant in New Hampshire is allowed to do tasks above what a basic dental assistant can do. Examples are removing sutures, removing and placing rubber dams or doing a fluoride application are just a few of the duties and tasks that a DANB CDA can do under the supervision of the dentist in New Hampshire.
GDA Graduate Dental Assistant
A Graduate Dental Assistant or GDA is allowed to perform similar task and duties to that a CDA can perform in New Hampshire. All under the supervision of the dentist.
Dental Assistant Qualified to Perform Expanded Functions
A Dental Assistant Qualified to Perform Expanded Functions can perform any expanded duty in New Hampshire, with the exception of restorative duties. All EFSA candidates must be at least 18 years old, be a graduate dental assistant or CDA and carry certification for each expanded function that they perform. These tasks can be nitrous oxide monitoring or sealant application.
(EFDA) Expanded Function Dental Auxiliary
An (EFDA) Expanded Function Dental Auxiliary must register with the (NHBDE) New Hampshire Board of Dental Examiners and be a minimum of 18 years old, be a registered dental hygienist or they can be a current DANB CDA certification holder, a graduate of a CODA approved training course, have at least 4,500 hours of clinical training time and experience, have a current recommendation for an EFDA training course from a licensed dentist, have a current BLS and HCP certification and they must also finish an EFDA course in dental restorations along with applying for an EFDA permit from the NHBDE.
