What is the process to become a dental assistant in Illinois?
The governing body in charge of regulation and certification for dental professionals and assistants and dental assistant schools in Illinois is the Illinois Board of Dentistry. A dental assistant at the entry level, as long as they are supervised by a licensed dentist can perform basic functions and chair-side procedures without certification and regulation per the state of Illinois Dental Practice Act.
Becoming an Expanded Functions Dental Assistant in Illinois will require more training and work. Lets take look at what it will take.
1 – Be at least 18 years old
2 – Show adequate level of expertise and clinical experience
3 – Take and successfully complete approved training that is specific to any expanded function you are looking to perform on the job, or you can go about completing an approved dental assisting program that must include the expanded function you are looking to preform on the job in the training curriculum. All functions must be done under supervision of the licensed dentist too.
There are expanded functions that require more training and time than others in Illinois. Coronal polishing, place pit and fissure sealants, monitoring patients under sedation and monitoring patients under nitrous oxide have other requirements and we list them below.

2 – Have a valid and current DANB CDA certification or candidates must have at least two years clinical experience or have over 4,000 hours of clinical experience
3 – Pass a pre-examination on basic dental procedures and the dentistry funamentals
