How to Become a Dental Assistant in Connecticut
The Connecticut State Dental Commission regulates all dental professionals and their dental assistants. There are two levels of dental assisting in Connecticut and they the entry level basic dental assistant and the Expanded Function Dental Assistant also known as an EFDA. We go in to the requirements for each below for you.
Basic Dental Assistant – There are no training or certification requirements for becoming a basic dental assistant. The training for the job comes directly from the supervising dentist and it is done on the job. All duties and supportive tasks must be done under the supervision of the dentist. Radiography duties and x-ray tasks can be performed if candidates have passed the RHS exam from DANB.
(EFDA) Expanded Function Dental Assistant – All EFDA candidates have to have earned the (CDA) Certified Dental Assistant certification from DANB or the (COA) Certified Orthodontic Assistant certification from DANB. Then all candidates must take and complete an EFDA education program at a CODA approved dental assistant program (like the ones detailed for you below), and then they must pass the preventive and restorative functions tests.
