What is the process to become a dental assistant in Iowa?

All dental assistants and dental professionals are overseen and regulated by the Iowa Dental Board. All dental assistants in Iowa must resister with the Iowa Dental Board and to get registered with the Iowa Dental Board, candidates must be at least 17 years of age and have a high school diploma or a GED. There are opportunities to be a dental assistant trainee in Iowa if you are currently enrolled in a cooperative educational training or work study program at a high school in the state of Iowa. Aside for the dental assistant trainee there are two more levels to dental assisting and we walk through how to achieve those levels below.

(RDA) Registered Dental Assistant – All candidates for this position will have have completed a minimum of six months of job experience in a dental office as a Dental Assistant Trainee (or they have a show that they have had experience out of state in a similar position) or take and graduate from a Iowa Dental Board approved and also CODA approved dental assisting program. All candidates will also have to complete Iowa Dental Board approved training in jurisprudence, hazardous materials and infection control and take and pass exams in each category.

(RDA) Registered Dental Assistant with Expanded Duties – All candidates will have to achieve two years of work experience on the job as an RDA or they will have to have earned a DANB (CDA) certification. Follow that with the completion of Iowa Dental Board approved training in each of the desired functions they want to be qualified in, they will also have to have earned a current CPR certificate.
