What is the Process to Become a Dental Assistant in Indiana?

Dental assistants and dental professionals across the state of Indiana are under teh supervision and regulatory oversight from the Indiana State Board of Dentistry. The role of a basic dental assistant, which is the entry level position in dental assisting, has no required training or certification for doing the job and all duties must be overseen by a licensed dentist. But, if you want to do expanded duties and procedures you will need to fulfill more requirements to able to do so. For example: coronal polishing is an expanded duty and so x-ray procedures and if you want to be able to perform these tasks, each one has specific requirements for them. Let us take a look at them below.

Coronal Polishing Requirements for Dental Assistants in Indiana – Candidates will have to have either completed a one year of job experience in a dental practice and have also taken and successfully finished an Indiana Dental Board approved program that includes coronal polishing training. The training will include 5 hours of classroom learning, 2 hours of clinical training and lab work and lastly candidate will have to practice the procedure on 5 patients under the observation and direct supervision of a licensed dentist.

X-Ray Requirements for Dental Assistants in Indiana – Handling x-ray equipment and performing dental radiographic procedures in Indiana requires that dental assistants earn a dental radiographic license from the Indiana State Department of Health/Division of Medical Radiology Services by completing a training in radiography.
