How to become a CNA in Michigan
Michigan Certified Nurse Aides are under the regulation and jurisdiction of the Long Term Care Division of the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs otherwise known as (LARA). The Long Term Care Division approves all accredited nurse aide programs and they contract Prometric to manage the nurse aide registry with (LARA).
Step 1 – Meet any Necessary Michigan CNA Course Requirements
You must meet the listed prerequisites to have access to approved CNA classes in Michigan.
Be at least 18 years old
Have a TB Test
Show immunizations
Be able to read and write in English
Some schools require a HS diploma/GED
Step 2 – Enroll in to a Michigan approved CNA program
The organization given the responsibility of oversight of all nursing assistant courses in Michigan is the Long Term Care Division of the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA). Only graduates who complete their CNA schooling at a program approved by this organization will be able to test for CNA licensing.

Step 3 – Meet the training requirement for Michigan
You will be mandated to complete 75 hours in the classroom and an additional 16 hours of hands-on clinical instruction. If you do not meet this demand, you are not eligible to challenge the Michigan Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation.
Step 4 – Pass Michigan Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation
The state nursing assistant certification exam used in Michigan is the Michigan Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation. The test is made of a written and clinical section.
Prometric is the national testing service that administers the testing for licensing to future nursing assistants in the state. The sites in Michigan where the assessment is typically given are displayed here. You should check with the service to find out about examination dates and times for when the next exams are going to be administered.
The cost is $76.50 for application and $100 the day of the exam.
Step 5 – Get yourself registered on the Michigan Nurse Aide Registry
Your name must be listed to the MI nursing aide registry after you pass the certification test in Michigan. Operated by the Long Term Care Division of the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) and Prometric, this is a checklist of all of the nursing assistants who are eligible to work in the state. Unless your name is on this list, you cannot be eligible to work.
Once you’ve passed the Michigan Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation, the assessment company will alert the registry about your brand new status. In Michigan, you are normally included on the checklist within a few weeks of passing the certification examination.
