Step 3 – Satisfy the state’s clinical and classroom hours requirement

Graduating from a formal program is mandatory to become a CNA. Training programs in Arizona will require you to finish the state’s mandatory minimum of 80 hours in a hands-on clinical environment, and 140 hours in class. You are not eligible to take the Arizona Nursing Assistant Certification Exam until you have completed all of the required hours.

Step 4 – Pass the Arizona Nursing Assistant Certification Exam

Certified nursing assistants in Arizona need to pass the Arizona Nursing Assistant Certification Exam to earn their certification. This exam asks test takers to complete a segment consisting of written questions, and a clinical demo.

In Arizona there are LNA and CNA positions. An (LNA) Licensed Nursing Assistant and the (CNA) Certified Nursing Assistant. The difference between an LNA and a CNA is that an LNA must pass a state and federal fingerprint check before they add their name to the registry for licensed nursing personnel in Arizona. All other training is the same for LNAs and CNAs.

The exam is administered by the national assessment provider Headmaster, LLP. The locations in Arizona where the assessment is typically administered have been detailed below. Make sure you refer to the company’s internet site for schedules.

  • Phoenix
  • Mesa
  • Tempe
  • Flagstaff
  • Tucson

In the state of Arizona there is not a mandatory application fee for candidates applying by exams. But, applicants have to pay $50 for their certificate issued as a document. (Status can be verified online.)

Applicants who wish to have their fingerprints processed before passing the examination will also have to pay an additional $50 fee.

Application packets may be mailed or delivered to the Board office. The office is located in Phoenix. Click here to see all the applications and forms necessary for testing.

Step 5 – Get listed on the Arizona Nurse Aide Registry

Once you’ve taken and passed the certification examination, the last step you need to complete to start earning a living as a nursing assistant in Arizona is having your name added on the Arizona Nurse Aide Registry. Maintained by the AZBN, this is a listing of all of the certified nursing assistants who are eligible to work in the state. State guidelines mandate that you have to be on this record prior to working.

Fortunately, you typically do not have to do anything at all for this to occur. Shortly after you have passed the Arizona Nursing Assistant Exam, the testing service will inform the registry of your new status. In the majority of cases, your wait time to finish this procedure in Arizona is no more than two weeks. Below is a link to registry website. For answers to all other concerns you may have, we recommend that you contact the registry using the information supplied.
